Academic Essay #2 : The Persuasive Essay

Due date: Friday, November 17, before 10pm – worth  20% of grade

You will state a position (thesis) and defend it using 3 to 5 strong arguments backed up by reasons. You will also include 3 corresponding counter arguments also backed up by reasons. Use academic peer-reviewed and other formal sources (reports on global trends prepared by internationally recognized and reputable sources, for instance) to persuade your peers and myself.

Write 1000 – 1250 words (about 5-6 pages).

Prove your points using evidence, and cite using between six and eight (6-9) peer-reviewed academic articles and  formal reports.

You may draw upon annotations from first assignment and references used from the Compare/Contrast Essay. It is expected you will add on a few new resources (a minimum of 6, to a maximum of 9) to expand your reference list for this essay.

The challenge will be to stay on topic, focus your topic to something manageable, and tie every single supporting argument you make to your thesis, or main idea.

So, you have to defend your views by taking in to account others’ different views, and then either argue for your own position, or concede the argument.

Let’s have a conversation about your topic: (be sure to take notes)

Review your main topic for the first 2 assignments, and reflect on and discuss/note down answers to these questions:

  1. What is your topic? How can you broaden your discussion?
  2. What questions do you have based on the research you did?
  3. What are your own reasons for examining this topic in more depth?
  4. Do you have a strong POV on a topic with many perspectives?
  5. Where do you want to explore next to find out more?
